APNG vs GIF — Why Animated PNG Wins on Quality
GIF was invented in 1987 and carries a fundamental limitation: each frame can only contain 256 colors. This is catastrophic for text animations with neon glows, color gradients, or soft shadow effects — those smooth color transitions get reduced to ugly banding and color blocks. APNG (Animated PNG) solves this completely. Each frame is a full 24-bit PNG image, supporting 16 million colors with smooth gradients, real anti-aliasing on curved text, and per-pixel alpha transparency (not just binary on/off like GIF).
This free APNG text generator exports the same animation you see in the canvas preview as a true animated PNG file. The output quality is pixel-perfect — what you see is exactly what downloads. This makes APNG ideal for neon text effects, gradient fills, glow animations, and any style where color accuracy matters. APNG is supported in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge — all major browsers — and many CMSs, Discord, Slack, and modern messaging apps display it correctly.
The only trade-off vs GIF is that APNG files are generally larger because PNG compression is less aggressive than GIF's LZW. For the highest-quality small-file format, use WebM instead. But for anything that needs PNG-level compatibility without GIF's color limit, APNG is the right choice.

How to Export Animated Text as APNG
- 1Design your text animation above. APNG shines with neon glows, gradients, and effects that GIF would crush.
- 2In the Export panel, click APNG.
- 3Set FPS (10–25 recommended for balance between smoothness and file size).
- 4Optional: set background to Transparent in Background settings for alpha channel output.
- 5Click Export APNG. The file saves with a .png extension and plays as an animation in supporting apps.
